Torres del Paine, Chile

August is a great time to visit Torres del Paine. High season in December means lines for the trek and resort prices; August has the park almost to yourself, the same guanacos, and the same impossibly blue lakes, with 40% lower prices and snow on the mountains for the most dramatic photos of the year.

01
EcoCamp Patagonia — Standard Dome$$
Geodesic dome · Torres del Paine

The most photographed geodesic domes on the planet are inspired by the shelters of the Kawésqar community, Patagonia's first inhabitants. The Standard Dome is EcoCamp's most accessible option: 10 square meters, a skylight to see the stars from bed, a fleece blanket, and a shared bathroom. No electricity, no electric heating, no WiFi, no phone signal. The park's first sustainable hotel runs on solar power, composting systems, and solar thermal water heaters. The landscape's "gorillas" — the pink granite towers — are visible from the window. Booking.com rating for couples: 9.6 out of 10. Estimated price: $120–200 USD/night (August low season).

The Singing Lamb Hostel$
Hostel · Puerto Natales

The most social and best-rated hostel in Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine's gateway town, 1.5 hours from the park. Private rooms with bathroom, a fully equipped communal kitchen, a lounge with fireplace, a library of trekking guides, and the most up-to-date park conditions board available in town. For arrival and departure nights, before and after entering the park. Estimated price: $45–80 USD/night, private room.

03
Patagonia Camp$$$
Luxury yurts · Lake Toro, Torres del Paine

For the trip's biggest splurge night: luxury yurts in the lenga forest above Lake Toro, with heating, real beds, a private bathroom, and panoramic windows toward the park's mountains. All-inclusive program with guided excursions included, and the luxury-camp atmosphere that justifies the price in the context of Patagonia's low season. For the couple who wants to contrast two nights in a Standard Dome with one night in a yurt. Estimated price: $280–400 USD/night (August low season).

Glacier Grey Boat Tour

Glacier Grey has a 6-kilometer-wide blue ice front over Grey Lake. The catamaran tour from the Refugio Grey dock brings the boat close to icebergs calved from the glacier front — some the size of four-story buildings, with the impossible blue of ice compressed over thousands of years. For the couple who doesn't want the full W Trek: the boat ride to Grey is the park's most striking half-day plan.

02
Torres del Paine W Trek

The W Trek covers 80 kilometers over 4–5 days, using the Las Torres and Vértice Patagonia refugios. The route, named for the shape it draws on the map, includes the Base Torres Lookout (the most iconic), French Valley, and Glacier Grey. In August, snow on the towers makes for the most dramatic photos of the year, and the trails see less traffic than in high season. Book ahead.

Curated tips
Lagom Tips for Torres del Paine, Chile
Layers are the system: Patagonian wind doesn't respect forecasts. A layering approach — thermal base, fleece mid-layer, windproof outer shell — works better than any single "does everything" jacket. Couples who pack separate layers adapt to weather that changes four times a day.
Booking refugios: The W Trek refugios in August see lower occupancy than in December, but that doesn't mean they're empty — many trekking groups also prefer the low season. Book at least 30 days ahead at lastorres.com for the east-side refugios, and at vertice.travel for Paine Grande and Grey.
Patagonian lamb: Spit-roasted lamb (al palo) is Chilean Patagonia's most representative dish. In Puerto Natales, Mesita Grande serves it on pizza in a casual version; La Última Esperanza serves a restaurant version. For the last dinner before the flight home: the lamb, a glass of Carménère, and the view over the estuary.
Fun fact

EcoCamp was the first fully sustainable lodging inside Torres del Paine National Park, with its domes being the world's first geodesic hotel rooms. The design is inspired by the shelters of the Kawésqar, Patagonia's first human inhabitants, and became the model later replicated in dozens of dome hotels across Europe, Argentina, and Chile. Sleeping at EcoCamp is sleeping in the original prototype.

Checklist
What to pack
0 / 7
✈️Flight

Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport (PUQ) in Punta Arenas, with direct flights from Santiago (SCL) on LATAM and Sky Airline (3 hours). From Punta Arenas: a direct bus to Puerto Natales (3 hours, $15–20 USD) or a private transfer. Alternative: fly to El Calafate (Argentina) and cross overland to Puerto Natales (5 hours by bus; no visa required between Chile and Argentina for most Latin American travelers).

🗺️Patagonia in August

Southern-hemisphere winter — daytime temperatures from -5 to 10°C (23–50°F). The towers can have snow on their peaks. The W Trek refugios are operating but with reduced capacity. Patagonian wind in August can gust up to 80 km/h — EcoCamp's dome doors are engineered for exactly that.

Winter gear for both travelers: waterproof boots with fleece lining, mountain pants with a membrane, a windproof jacket. There's no negotiating with the gear list in Patagonia in August.
🗺️Park entrance

CONAF charges a park entrance fee at the gates — in 2025 it was approximately $27 USD per person for non-residents. Booking access to the Base Torres Lookout is mandatory in some seasons — check pasesparques.cl.
